Go on a journey through the history of BC football, starting with the first game in 1893.
Few teams in the country inspire as much passion from their fans as Boston College, and no other book captures the history of their beloved Eagles like the Boston College Football Vault®: The History of the Eagles. As much a scrapbook as it is a history book, opening the vault is like getting a guided tour through your own personal Boston College football museum.
While a high school senior, author Reid Oslin watched the Eagles defeat Virginia 30-21 on Nov. 16, 1963, and he has seldom missed a BC game since then. He worked as the first graduate assistant hired by BC’s Sports Information Office and was later named sports information director, a position he held from 1974 through 1997. He currently serves as associate director of the university’s Office of Public Affairs. Oslin is in demand as the unofficial “BC athletic historian” and as master of ceremonies at numerous BC athletic and Varsity Club events.
The book combines fascinating tales of Eagle legends — Jimmy Fitzpatrick, Luke Urban, Frank Cavanaugh, Chuck Darling, Joe McKenney, “Gloomy Gil” Dobie, Frank Leahy, “Chuckin’ Charlie” O’Rourke, Mike Holovak, Art Donovan, Ernie Stautner, Jack Concannon, Frank “Red” Harris, Fred Willis, Mike Esposito, Mike Kruczek, Jack Bicknell, Doug Flutie, Glenn Foley, Mike Ruth, William Green and more — with never-before-published historic photographs and replicas of unique memorabilia tucked inside the pages.
Explore the book’s dozens of sleeves and pockets to get your hands on an 1893 team photo, a 1930 letter from legendary coach Knute Rockne, a 1940 Cotton Bowl booklet, a 1957 Tom Joe Sullivan cartoon, a 1962 Eagle sticker, a 1975 Notre Dame cartoon, a 1984 “Miami Miracle” bookmark, a 1985 Flutie bumper sticker and a 1992 “Beat Notre Dame” button.
In addition, you will find reproductions of tickets and programs from some of Boston College’s most memorable games — the 1936 BC-Holy Cross game; the 1976 BC-Texas game; the 1982 Tangerine Bowl against Auburn; the 1985 Cotton Bowl against Houston; the 1988 Emerald Isle Classic against Army in Dublin, Ireland; the 1992 BC-Michigan State game; and the 1994 Aloha Bowl against Kansas State.
